What is a kosher phone?

A kosher phone is a mobile phone whose operating system has been rebuilt so that internet browsing, app installation and media access are restricted at a level the person holding the phone cannot change. It is not a phone with a filtering app bolted on, and it is not a basic feature phone. It is a full Android device that has had the browser and the open app store removed from the system image itself, leaving the things you actually need — calls, messages, navigation, banking, Zmanim, a Siddur — and nothing else.

That distinction matters. An app-level filter can be uninstalled by anyone with ten minutes and a search engine. A DNS whitelist blocks every domain that has not been explicitly approved. A closed operating system removes the route entirely. KosherDroid uses all three together: a closed OS, a curated kosher app store, and DNS filtering underneath both.
